Product Description
The source piano was a Yamaha C7, recorded by VR sound's Franz Pusch, using a proprietary binaural recording technique involving a dummy head and two audiophile microphones. Original recording was at 24 bit, 96 khz. Due to the nature of the recording process, listening to the piano produces an experience equivalent to actually sitting in front of "the real thing".
The result of this recording method is a piano that sounds much more natural, with a "you are there" quality to it. Conventional piano sampling (indeed, most piano recording today, period) involves stereo microphones placed inside the piano, pointing downward at the strings. The fact of the matter is that no one actually listens to a piano this way. One is either seated in front of the keyboard and playing, or seated in the audience facing the narrower end of the piano and hearing the stereo image as low notes on the right and high notes on the left.
Furthermore, the "artifacts" of the piano sound, such as sympathetic string buzz, damper pedal noise, soundboard knock and room sound were all left intact in the DCP productions/VR Sound piano samples. Many sampled pianos have some of these artifacts removed in processing the samples, which results in a more "synthetic" or "synthesizer" piano sound, certainly not as natural and realistic.
Recorded from the player’s perspective (i.e. seated at the piano bench), the VR60 60meg triple-strike piano is a warm, smooth-toned, full-bodied piano, perfect for classical and jazz music.
Dave Polich of DCP Productions, who programmed the "Action Sound FX" soundbank for Motif, programmed the pianos specifically for Motif. Dave has also programmed factory patches for Yamaha for over ten years, having done many of the sounds that are part of Motif's factory soundset.
